What to Look For  


 

Most suicides involve planning and preparation, and don't happen on the spur of the moment. There are warning signs which can give you clues about what you may be heading for or what someone may be planning to do. These signs are not things that just linked to suicide, they may be about something else going on, but obviously it is worth exploring just in case.

 

Changes in Behaviour

A noticeable or extreme change in behaviour
Withdrawal from friends and relations
Signs of distress such as crying
Increase in impulsive or reckless behaviour
Changes in alcohol and drug use
Focus in talking and writing about death and suicide
Getting affairs in order
Giving away valued possessions

 

Thoughts & Feelings

Extreme changes in mood and feelings
Thoughts about suicide
Unable to gain perspective on the situation
Feelings of loneliness, sadness, isolation, rejection, guilt or helplessness
Feeling very depressed, anxious or stressed
Low self-esteem and self-worth

 

Physical Changes

A noticeable change in appearance, showing less self-care
Changes in sleep patterns
Changes in appetite
Changes in sexual interest
Looking listless, depressed or lacking in energy
